PlayStation Helpdesk
The Sony PlayStation has revolutionized the way we look at and play games. Games and entertainment has been redefined by offering the most compelling interactive content and the capability to be used as a network terminal in the coming broadband era. And now, PSP is a new portable entertainment system that allows users to enjoy 3D games, with high-quality full-motion video, and high-fidelity stereo audio.
If you own a Sony PlayStation product and are having trouble with the system, visit the official PlayStation Support Site or feel free to review the following frequently asked help desk questions:
My PS2 is not turning on!
First make sure your PlayStation 2 is plugged in. This sounds simple, but you would be surprised how many people don’t do this.
Check to see that the other electronics (television or screen, and VCR) are connected properly, that they are plugged into a functioning outlet, and that your system has been TURNED ON using the MAIN POWER switch on the back. Simple, yet so important.
I can’t get anything to work in my PS2!
Some PlayStation games may perform differently on PlayStation 2 than they do on PlayStation. Or they may not work at all! Make sure the disc can be used with this system. Check that the disc is inserted correctly, with the label side up.
If you’re game skips or freezes, or if there is no life coming from a disc that has been inserted in the console, make sure the underside of the disc is clean. Clean your discs using a dry, lint-free cloth. Circular pads made specifically for cleaning discs, sold at most music or computer software stores, are recommended. Other stuff, such as a paper towel or a T-shirt, may scratch the disc. If there are any scratches, smudges, or fingerprints on the disc, it may not function properly.
If the disc still does not play correctly, attempt to play it in another system, like as a DVD player or CD player. This will show if the problem lies with the disc or if your PlayStation 2 needs repairs.
Sometimes, certain DVD videos do not work with the PlayStation 2. You can blame this on the differences in software. Try restarting your DVD video.
There is no picture on my T.V. screen!
Make sure the PlayStation 2 and TV (and VCR if using one) are turned on and that they are securely connected together. Make sure that they are turned on too. Look to see that the AC Power cord is not damaged.
Make sure you have selected the correct Video Input or channel on your TV or VCR.
The system may be on an unleveled surface. Place the system on a flat, stable spot. Do not mess with the system.
If the video signal from the system has to go through the VCR to get to the TV, the copy protection applied to some DVD videos could affect picture quality. When playing a DVD video on the PlayStation 2, connect the system directly to the TV.
There is no sound!
Make sure the PlayStation 2 and TV (and VCR if using one) are turned on and that they are securely connected using the AV cable (integrated audio/video), RFU Adaptor, or S-Video Cable. Visually check to make sure the AC Power cord is not damaged.
The TV volume may be set on low or mute. Fix this and don’t do it again! Adjust the volume setting.
Make sure you have selected the correct channel on your T.V.
If you are using speakers, check the speakers or on and the volume is on. The system setting may not be right for when the system is connected to audio equipment with DIGITAL OUT (OPTICAL) connectors. Please refer to the manual for your audio equipment. You may not have selected the appropriate input on the receiver (amplifier). Set the input so that you can listen to sound from the system.
The system may be in search/slow-motion mode (when playing a DVD video). Once again, fix it and don’t do it again!
I’m having some memory card problems!
Please make sure that you are saving a PlayStation 2 game to a Playstation 2 memory card. It won’t work!
Check to make sure you are using a Playstation 2 memory card. A memory card of a different brand may not be compatible with the system.
Check that the Memory Card is in the system itself. You may not be saving the right way.
Make sure that there is enough free space in your memory card to save with. And if none of this stuff works for you, put the card in another PS2. If it works, fix your console, if it doesn’t, get a new memory card.
In order to test your memory cards, insert them into another PlayStation 2, if possible. If the memory cards do not function properly, they may need to be replaced. If they do function properly, the console may need repairs.
I’m having some DVD problems!
Be sure that your PS2 and your TV are hooked up right. Make sure that they are on too. Any other cables such as an AV cable or RFU Adaptor are also connected. Make sure that the AC Cable is securely connected.
If a DVD begins to skip or freeze, or if there is no reaction whatsoever from a disc that has been inserted in the console, make sure the underside of the disc is clean. Clean your discs using a dry, lint-free cloth. We recommend small, circular pads made specifically for cleaning discs, sold at most music or computer software stores. Other materials, such as a paper towel or a T-shirt, may scratch the disc. If there are any scratches, smudges, or fingerprints on the disc, it may not function properly.
If the disc still does not play correctly, attempt to play it in another system, if possible. This will help determine if the problem lies with the disc or if your PlayStation 2 system needs repairs.
The TV might not be on the Video input setting. Make sure you have selected Video input on the TV.
In rare instances, certain DVD videos do not operate properly with the PlayStation 2. This is primarily due to variations in the manufacturing processes or software encoding of the DVD video software. Try restarting your DVD video.
